The Spanish love their holidays and are often known to “hacer Puente” or make an extra-long weekend out of a holiday that falls on a Thursday or Tuesday by also taking off the Friday or Monday that falls in between the day off and the weekend.

2021

Friday 1 Jan – Año Nuevo – also known as New Year’s Day

Wednesday 6 Jan* – Día de Reyes/Epifanía del Señor – it is a religious holiday celebrating the Three Kings. For most of Spain, this is the main day of celebration, when the three wise men visited baby Jesus after his birth and children can expect a post-Christmas round of gifts on this holiday.

Thursday 9 March* – Jueves Santo – also known as Maundy Thursday, which falls before Easter and celebrates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. Being a Catholic country, Spain places great importance on the Easter holidays.

Friday 19 Mar* – San José – is a religious holiday celebrating Saint Joseph. As you will quickly find, Spaniards in general, are very dedicated to their Saints.

Friday 2 Apr – Viernes Santo – Good Friday

Sunday 4 April- Pascua – Easter Sunday

Friday 23 April -Día de Aragón – which is also known as Community Day

Saturday 1 May – Día del Trabajador – is Labor Day, and a commemoration of the introduction of worker´s rights and now a traditional day of protest by the Socialist Party and unionized groups.

Thursday 24 June – Sant Joan – Saint John’s festival and a big celebration in Barcelona. Given the summer, beautiful weather, and influx of tourists, the tribute to Sant Joan is a justified excuse for having a huge party!

Sunday 15 Aug – Asuncion de la Virgen – which is also known as Assumption and is a religious holiday celebrating the day the Virgin Mary ascended into heaven.

Saturday 11 September – Fiesta National de Catalunya – National Day of Catalonia, marked by fireworks and parties.

Friday 24 September – La Mercè – This is the party day of the city, as it celebrates its patron saint, the Virgin de la Merce.
