Pets Guide for Expat<\/h2>\n

If the thought of leaving your pet behind is too heart-breaking to consider, have no fear. Relocating your pet to Amsterdam is not only possible, but even easy when you know how.<\/p>\n

Amsterdam is a very pet friendly city. Taking your dog for a walk, you will find yourself socializing with strangers on the street, especially with other dog owners. In most cases, owners are happy to let their dogs interact with other dogs. The local residents are particularly fond of dogs and as many live in apartments, or have small backyards, there are many parks for walking dogs. As Amsterdam is extremely flat it is good for walks, as long as your dog is used to being in a busy city. You are not required to have your dog on a lead in most places, although it may be advisable if your dog is not used to traffic and large numbers of people. Most landlords do allow tenants to keep a dog or cat.<\/p>\n

Unlike many cities you are allowed to take your dog into a store that sells food (except big supermarkets). Some bars even allow furry friends. Also, you may take your dog (or cat) on public transport as long as it is small enough to sit on your lap. If it is a larger pet then you may purchase a ticket for it. However, keep in mind that most Amsterdammers have their pets trained since young ages, which is why dogs behave appropriately in public spaces. In case your pet is very active and does not obey your commands, taking the public transits is not the best idea.<\/p>\n

Amsterdam is not a particularly expensive city for pet owners with food<\/a>, litter, and other supplies widely available and competitively priced.<\/p>\n

Although you are expected to clean up any mess your dog leaves on the street, or risk a fine, there are marked places within parks where your dog may relieve itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
